Me 20 Years from Now ２０ねんごのわたし

いまはにせんさんじゅうねんです。わたしはさんじゅうきゅうさいです。ちゅごくのゆうめいいきんこういんですが、かぞくとアメリカのニューヨークにいます。ちゅごくはいれいじゃありませんから。そして、わたしはにぎやかなまちがすきです。

かぞくがさんにんいます。おっとはイギリスじんです。ゆうめいなけいざいのけんきゅうしゃです。そして、おんなのこがひとりいます。おなまえはエリザベスです。いまじゅうはちさいです。コロンビアだいがくのいちねんせいです。

だいがくでにほんごをべんきょうしました。わたしはちゅごくごとにほんごとえいごがわかります。せんげつにほんのしゃいんではたらきました。にほんはとてもたのしいですね。にほんりよりはおいしいですね。

すしがだいすきです！

わたしのせいかつはかんたんです。まいにちごぜんはちじはんがらごごろくじまでかいしゃではたらきます。うちからかいしゃまでくるまでじゅぽんだけかかります。まいばんかぞくとばんごはんをたべます。いいですよ！

ことしのふゆやすみにシンガポールへいきたいです。ニューヨークのふゆはとてもさむいですがら。そして、てんきはわるいです。まいにちせいがつはいそがしいですが、たのしいです！

Coming to an End

Tomorrow is our last blog class and soon we will have our last Japanese class of this semester...

早いですね！

I really can't believe time has flown by so fast.

Just this morning I was looking at an online comic in Japanese and I realized that I could actually read the script that was written. I was shocked and amazed at how far my Japanese has progressed.

Thus to conclude this semester I would like to first dole out some thanks.
To Tatsumi-sensei, thank you for putting up with our...eccentric... class of students and never failing to keep your sense of humor.

To my classmates, I never thought we would grow this close but I really wouldn't have it any other way. While we might not be together again next semester, the laughs (among other things) that we shared have been super special.

To Miller-san and Santos-san, Never. Ever. Change.

わたしのりょう

みんなさん、

ごめんなさい！せんしゅうはとてもいそがしいです。テストとしゅくだいがとてもありました。そして、こんしゅうもあまりひまじゃありません。

ニューヨークはおおきいのまちですから、コロンビアだいがくのりょうはとてもちいさいです。わたしのりょうはふるいですが、べんりです。まいしゅうのかようびともくようびにわたしはごぜんくじのクラスがあります。ごぜんはちじよんじゅうぷんにおきます。わたしのりょうはしょくどととしょかんのちかくです。りょうのビルはじゅうさんかいがあります。わたしのへやはきゅうかいです。りょうのなかにはベドやつくえなどあります。いまはじゅういちじから、りょうのそとはさむいですが、りょうのなかはとてもあついです。

わたしはとてもいそがしいですから、わたしのへやはあまりきれいじゃありません。そして、はたしはとてもふくがあります。いすのうえやベドのうえもふくがあります。しょくどうでごはんをたべます。としょうかんでしゅくだいをします。

My Japanese Learning - Difficulties and Roadblocks

Now that it's been nearly two months since class started, I think I will start reflecting on my own growth as a Japanese student and the trials and tribulations I've met along the way.

Starting off, the class was easy. Almost too easy. Everything progressed at a normal pace. I guess it helped that I had learned hiragana before and knew how to introduce myself already.

For me, it was easy to handle the homework and vocab quizzes.

To learn a language, its important to be consistent. For me, I have the most trouble remembering phrases. Starting out, I had trouble remembering "~kara kimashita". Now, I know that "kara" means "from" and "kimashita" means "come". For me to remember a new phrase, I have to know what the individual components mean. That's just how I learn. I always struggle with the phrases given to us as "here, remember this".

I am interested to know about how the learning of Kanji will be for me. As a fluent Chinese speaker, I already recognize (and have an associated meaning/reading) with many of the characters we are being introduced to. This may prove tricky in the future. For example, in Chinese “安” means "safe" or "calm" while in Japanese, the same character in the phrase "安い" means "cheap". In Chinese, the character is read "an" while in Japanese it is read "yasu". I wonder if this will prove very difficult in the future.

I think for the most part, writing is easy for me. It is being able to respond quickly and fluently (speaking in Japanese while thinking in English) that is the most difficult. I hope to one day progress to the point where I can seamlessly switch between the two. That's the goal! Now it's up to me to put in the effort.

コロンビア大学のColumbia Collegeのがくせいはきにょうびからにちようびまでやすみます。わたしたちのキャンパスはきれいですが、ちいさいです。

せんしゅうのきんようびともだちとちゅうごくレストランへいきました。ちかてつのいちごうせんでいきます。あれのたべものはおいしいです。そしてやすいです！それからふくをかいました。ニューヨ－クのぜいはとてもたかいです！

どようびへもいきませんでした。Vine (にほんのレストラン）でひるやすみをたべました。それから、りょうえへいきました。ともだちとええがをみました。

にちようびとしょかんでべんきょしました。いまとてもいそがしいです！まいしゅうのにちようびとしょかんはにぎやかです。

にほんごのれんしゅう！

きょわじゅうがつじゅうさんにちです。

きょ、なんへもたべません。ばんごはんをください！

あしたはにほんごのテスト。だからきょうわたしはぶぶんけいをべんきょします。

Why Japanese?

Nearly a month ago today, I started the journey to learning a new language: Japanese. This has been by no means an easy process. 

As a freshman at Columbia university most of my classmates in Tatsumi-sensei's first year Japanese class are sophomores or seniors. For most of them, the motivation to take this class is clear. Some have an internship related to Japanese culture. Others need to fulfill a language requirement. All of these are reasonable explanations. But that leaves me...

Why am I taking Japanese? 

The truth is, there is no clear reason why. First I guess I have to mention my early fascination with Japanese anime/manga. Starting with Pokemon, this hobby quickly spiraled into an obsession complete with cosplay, jpop, and silly crushes on imaginary characters. But this was all just a phase. By the time I graduated from middle school, my intense love for manga died down as well. 

Next, I guess I have to consider practical reasons. Japan is the 3rd biggest economy of the world. As a native speaker of Chinese and English (the languages of the first and second largest economies), from a career standpoint, taking Japanese makes perfect logical sense. 

But that sounds almost too practical for a  19 year old... 

Truth be told, the best answer to this question would probably be "why not". As cliche as it may sound, the next four years of my life may be my last chance to devote my life to studying without worrying about bills, rent, taxes, and all the complications of being a true adult. I see this as my last chance to learn a language, to acquire a skill that will follow me for the rest of my life. 

To those of my fellow freshmen who only have one class some days.... I AM jealous. But not as jealous as you'll be when I can converse in fluent Japanese!
